ISFSI welcomes submissions for the ISFSI Newsletter “The Academy” and the online feed “The Buzz”. Please read the Submission Guidelines and complete the online form for consideration.

Newsletter Submission Guidelines

Please keep in mind that the purpose of our newsletter is to provide training material and features to ISFSI members to enhance the profession in any way possible. Personal essays or editorials are usually not accepted unless they are particularly compelling.

Quality: We strongly encourage authors to submit work tailored specifically to our readership (fire service instructors). Articles written specifically to promote a business or service will be rejected. In addition, ISFSI editors will remove any content that does not fit the guidelines outlined here. We also publish high-quality articles that have been previously printed elsewhere (with permission).

Article Types: The newsletter features two main columns: feature articles and training topic of the week. Additional columns/ sections can be added upon approval. Content formats that are accepted include:

  • Content Area Experts
  • How-to/Practicals
  • Case Studies
  • Strategic Perspective

Length: Main feature articles should range from 750-2,000 words. Training Tip of the Week articles should range from 500-750 words.

Research: Facts should be well-researched and supported, using the following as suggested resources:

  • Interviews with at least three local sources considered authorities on the topics. Include quotes from them in your article.
  • Journal articles or news stories that support your point. Link to or list these sources so that readers can find out more information.
  • Always use local, real-life situations and people to illustrate your topic.

Photographs: Writers are encouraged to submit photographs and graphics to accompany their articles (high-resolution jpg, gif, and png files accepted, maximum file size 5MB). Photos should illustrate and accurately reflect the topic, issue, and meaning of the article. You must have permission to use photo and graphics.

Deadlines: Complete articles must be received by the 1st of the month to be considered for publication the following month (for example: February 1 for newsletters in March). Submission by the deadline does not guarantee publication.

Editing: ISFSI works closely with the authors to refine articles for publication. In order to maintain the appropriate content and size of the newsletter, ISFSI reserves the right to reject certain submissions or postpone their publication to a later date. ISFSI also reserves the right to edit, change or omit certain content, including photographs and graphics, as deemed appropriate by the ISFSI newsletter team.
